The placement of a retromuscular prefascial prosthesis, as described by Jean Rives in 1973 [Rives 1973, 1987], has become a standard technique in the treatment of large incisional hernias [Flament 1994, 1995, 1997]. It should, moreover, be noted that the first principles of the technique were reported as far back as 1971 by the Belgium Congresson Surgery in a publication that went relatively unnoticed [Lardennois 1971].
In 1974, M.J. Notaras described a similar technique also using a mersilene prosthesis.
Subsequently, the use of the prefascial retromuscular site spread whilst the materials used for prostheses diversified [Debord 1998]. Other sites for the implantation of the prosthesis have been described. We can cite, in particular, intraperitoneal [Gillion 1997] and premuscular prostheses [Chevrel 1979].
